The precinct will be closed from Monday 21st February to July/August 2022 (with access to the Light to Light Walk still available).
Why is this work required?
Boyds Tower is an important historical site that attracts large numbers of visitors. Two lookouts offer breath-taking views of the coastline and whales during the whale watching season. The precinct was heavily impacted by the 2019-2020 bushfires and an upgrade of existing facilities is essential. These upgrades are an opportunity to deliver major improvements to meet increased visitor demand and make this unique site accessible to a broad range of ages and abilities. The upgrades will provide high quality, safe and accessible experiences.
What improvements will be made?
Visitor infrastructure – An upgraded walking track will be constructed including a number of viewing points and a new step off point for the Light to Light Walk. There will also be upgrades to improve the existing information shelter including new seating and accessible toilet facilities. Wheelchair access – To make this site more convenient to visitors with a broad range of abilities, the upgrade will improve wheelchair accessibility from the carpark to Boyds Tower. New wheelchair accessible lookouts will make the site more inclusive to visitors and showcase the dramatic red rock southern coastline. Increased carpark capacity – The upgrade will increase the carpark capacity from 10 to 22. It will also provide a designated bus and coach drop off zone for improved safety and to meet increasing visitor demand.
Planning your visit
The upgrades will commence on Monday 21st February 2022 and are anticipated to be complete by August 2022 (wet weather may impact this timeframe). The site will be closed during construction, but access to the Light to Light walk will remain
available to walkers. A temporary carpark/drop-off area for Light to Light walkers will be located 300m from the Boyds Tower Road turnoff. Please see the map below for the location of the interim access for the Light to Light walk, vehicle drop off/parking, and the interim start of the walk (pedestrian access only).
